TrainHorns.net - personal touch

intro

There's a lot more to this hobby than just facts and numbers! I have my own collection of horns that I'm always happy to share with others. In addition, I enjoy going to various horn and whistle events around the area. My take on these events will also be included in this section, along with some pictures and audio. Also, what would any hobby be without other people who share the interest? You'll get a brief look at some of the other collectors I've met along the way, too.

Altoona 2001

The manifold at the 2001 Altoona Horn and Whistle
Fair, with some of the whistles we blew that day
mounted and ready to blow. Note the large ship's
horn on the 'front' of the trailer, along with
the steam siren mounted on one of the manifolds.

Last, there is a very interesting aspect of the hobby that deals with retuning or modifying stock airhorns to produce different sounds. While I haven't done much retuning, there are others out there who are true artists at this. Also, I should note that not everyone likes a retuned horn. Some prefer stock, and find it disturbing when a perfectly good horn is modified beyond anything that can be converted back to factory spec. Well, I tend to agree with this only partially. In my collection, I won't modify a horn to the point of not being able to return it to factory spec. However, I have no right to tell other people to do this or not to do this. In fact, some of the most beautiful horns I've heard were those that were permanently altered! Still others, such as Elwood Belnap, take broken horns that would otherwise be junk and do what is necessary to make them work again. If modifying these horns is part of the restoration, so be it. Elwood is a master at horn salvage and modified horns, as I hope to show!

Lets get started, then!
